After a last long weekend this summer, I asked my low intermediate students what they did and Miguel said,
"I went to the beach. It was very sunny and the weather was very nice. I swam a lot and I started reading a new English book"
So far so good! I thought that was very good and that he was doing better with the past simple. I was really happy about the progress and even about the fact that he was very obviously more relaxed...
Then, he said;
"I took a lot of the sun and I ate a lot of octopussy with my girlfriend and her friends"
A few of the students caught the "joke" and burst out laughing, the rest, with perplexed looks on their faces insisted on an explanation....
The look on my face, as I tried to figure out how best to politely explain the difference between an Octopus and an ....pussy.
I love teaching, and these awkard moments are part of my job.
Where the hell is James Bond?
