Off colour language definitely has its place especially as a more direct form of verbal communication. There are some ideas and words that are indispensable since they cannot be replicated by standard language.

I taught adults in companies so I really had no restrictions other than in propriety like not mentioning sexual related words.

My most favourite and I believe most utilitarian off colour word is “bullshit”. I always taught this word at the end of a course (that way my students were too late to use it against me). I defined “BS” as “creative lying”.

In English you simply cannot tell someone they are a “liar’ or "you are lying" unless it is a serious breach of faith. Without this word so much humorous interaction would not be able to take place. In effect BS provides so much more latitude in expression and meaning.

Of course this can be abbreviated to just plain “shit” – Sounds like a load/crock of …… to me. My own special version is “You’re so full of it, you don’t know if you are coming or going”

Can anybody can come up with a substitute for or equal to the usefulness of “Bullshit”
